Single obliterators

 

Type 1

Description: 3 concentric circles 23 x 18mm. "Q.L" in the centre with no stop after "L"

Recorded Usage:  May 1860 - June 1865

Comments: 

Type 2

Description: "QL" in thin letters within a burst of 32 - 36 broken rays.

Recorded Usage:  November 1864 - August 24 1890

Comments: Seen with either a straight or curved tail on "Q" plus with or without a stop after "L".

Type 3

Description: "QL" in thick letters within a burst of 35 broken rays.

Recorded Usage:  November 1864 - April 1875

Comments: Also issued to 3 other offices so must be tied to prove it as a Brisbane mark.

Type 4

Description: "QL" within a star shape of 50 rays and 6 points. 

Recorded Usage:  May 1867 - September 1875

Comments: Also known as the "Brunswick Star"

Type 5

Description: "QL" within a horizontal oval made up of 9 bars.

Recorded Usage:  November 27 1877 is the only recorded dated example

Comments: Rarest of the obliterators with only 1 example known on cover.

Type 6

Description: "QL" within an oval made up of 34 - 37 rays

Recorded Usage:  February 1877 - April 1882

Comments: Various subtypes recorded with variances in the size of the lettering.

Type 7

Description: Vertical barred oval with "GPO" in the centre and a curved bar at each side

Recorded Usage:  September 1879 - March 27 1888

Comments: 2 examples recorded with the sidebars missing.

Type 8

Description: "GPO" within an oval of 32 unbroken rays. Stops after the letters.

Recorded Usage:  1889 - 1894

Comments: Very rare and not recorded on cover. Not to be confused with the type 9's.

Type 9a

Description: "GPO" within an oval of 25 rays. Letters 6mm high. No stops after the letters.

Recorded Usage:  From 1894

Comments: 

Type 9b

Description: "GPO" within an oval of 30 rays. Letters 5mm high. No stops after the letters.

Recorded Usage:  Known used in 1896

Comments: 

Type 9c

Description: "GPO" within an oval of 29 rays. Letters 5.5mm high. No stops after the letters.

Recorded Usage:  Known used in 1902.

Comments:

Description: A large rectangle with "GPO" having 6 bars above and 6 bars below

Recorded Usage:  Unknown

Comments: Probably used on parcels.

Type 11

Description: A continuous roller type with "GPO" separated by 5 horizontal lines 

Recorded Usage:  Extensive use

Comments: Used mainly on wrappers

 

Type 12

Description: A continuous roller type with "GPO" separated by 4 horizontal lines 

Recorded Usage:  Extensive use

Comments: Used mainly on wrappers
