Type 1

Description: Unframed, 28mm diameter, 2 arcs around the top, "BRISBANE" at the base, year in 2 digits at the top, month and date in the centre with the code letter "B" underneath.

Recorded Usage:  December 19 1862 - March 2 1867 

Codes: B

Comments: Usually used as a transit marking. Extremely difficult to find on cover. Best examples adorn Queensland Gas correspondence. 

Type 2

Description: Unframed, 24-25mm diameter, "BRISBANE" at the top and "QUEENSLAND" at the base. 2 line date with year in full.

Recorded Usage:  April 30 1860 - March 23 1865

Comments: Usually used as a transit marking.

Type 3a

Description: Unframed, 22-23˝mm diameter, "BRISBANE" at the top and "QUEENSLAND" at the base. 2 line date with 2 digit year. Code letter above date.

Recorded Usage:  1865 - 1867

Codes: A - D

Comments: 

Type 3b

Description: Same as Type 3a except the code letters are in italics.

Recorded Usage:  1867 - February 2 1879

Codes: a - d

Comments:  Different subtypes of the letters are known.

Type 3c

Description: Same as Type 3a except the codes are numerals

Recorded Usage:  1867 - 1879

Codes: 1 - 12

Comments:  Used mainly as a departure marking.

Type 4

Description: Framed, 19mm in diameter, Code letter at top, "BRISBANE" across the centre and a 2 line date

Recorded Usage:  January 2 1869 - May 20 1871

Codes: A - C

Comments:  Extremely rare. Used mainly as a backstamp.

Description: Similar to Type 3 but smaller being only 18mm in diameter. Year is in full

Recorded Usage:  One example reported in 1871

Type 6

Description: Unframed, 18mm diameter, code letter and a 2 line date with the year in full

Recorded Usage:  October 4 1871 - September 3 1873

Codes: a,b,d in italics and A, B, C in roman 

Comments: Not uncommon to see the codes inverted.

Type 7a

Description: Unframed, 23mm diameter, "QL" at base and a maltese cross at each side

Recorded Usage:  August 12 1875 - February 2 1878

Codes: B, C. 

Comments:  

 Type 7b

Description: Same as 7a however there is a small ornament at each side in place of the cross

Recorded Usage:  September 8 1879 - December 15 1883

Codes: A, C, D(1 rec)

Comments:  Both type 7's are extremely scarce.

Type 8

Description: Rectangular frame with a 4 line centre. Code number, "BRISBANE", date and "QL" at base

Recorded Usage:  September 13 1877 - August 7 1884

Codes: 1 - 11. (only one recorded example of 1 and three examples of 4 are known)

Comments:  Used mainly as a departure mark. 

Type 9a

Description: Unframed, 22˝mm diameter, 3 line centre with 2 digit year, code number at top.

Recorded Usage:  March 27 1878 - August 15 1885

Codes: 1, 5, 11(1 rec), 14, 15 

Comments:   

Type 9b

Description: Same as type 9a but with code letters instead of numbers

Recorded Usage:  Used concurrently with 9b

Codes: A, B, F, H, K(2 rec)

Comments: Also recorded with no code.

Type 10

Description: Framed, 25˝mm diameter, 3 line centre with 2 digit year, code number at top and 2 short bars at each side.

Recorded Usage:  November 10 1880 - September 2 1886

Codes: A - E, H, J, K, L, N, W(1 rec).

Comments:    

 Type 11 

Description: Framed, 26˝mm diameter, 4 line centre with Code number, "BRISBANE", date and "QL" at base

Recorded Usage:  January 8 1881 - October 3 1881

Codes: 1, 2, 3, 4(1 rec), 5(1 rec), 6, 8, 9.

Comments: Very short term usage.  

Type 11 a

Description: Same as Type 11 but oval in shape.

Codes: 4, 8, 13

Recorded Usage:  3 examples recorded in March/April 1883. Recently discovered by Dave Elsmore.

 Type 12

Description: British squared circle type. "BRISBANE" at the top with a code letter, date and "QL" at the base

Recorded Usage:  1883 - 1892

Codes: A, B(1 rec), C, D, E(1 rec), F, H(2 types), K, L, P, T, U.

Comments: Extremely rare on cover.  

Type 13

Description: Unframed, 23mm diameter, 3 line centre with code and date.

Recorded Usage:  April 15 1886 - 1891

Codes: A, B, C, D, H, I, K, L(1 rec), M, N, O, P.

Comments: Very similar to type 9 however the code letter is set lower. 

Type 14a

Description: Octagonal, framed, 21˝-23mm diameter, "PHB", code, "BRISBANE" and a 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  For all type 14's...Earliest usage is July 12 1887

Codes: 1 - 9

Comments: Type 14's were used to cancel mail deposited in the pillar box. PHB was for HOME deliveries, that is mail for Queensland excepting Brisbane city.  

 Type 14b

Description: Octagonal, framed, 21˝-23mm diameter, "POB", code, "BRISBANE" and a 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  For all type 14's...Earliest usage is July 12 1887

Codes: 1 - 5

Comments: Type 14's were used to cancel mail deposited in the pillar box. POB was for OVERSEAS deliveries.

Type 14c

Description: Octagonal, framed, 21˝-23mm diameter, "PTB", code, "BRISBANE" and a 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  For all type 14's...Earliest usage is July 12 1887

Codes: 1 - 9

Comments: Type 14's were used to cancel mail deposited in the pillar box. PTB was for TOWN deliveries, that is mail for the Brisbane city area. 

Type 14d

Description: Octagonal, framed, 21˝-23mm diameter, "PXB", code, "BRISBANE" and a 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  For all type 14's...Earliest usage is July 12 1887

Codes: 1 - 7

Comments: Type 14's were used to cancel mail deposited in the pillar box. PXB was for INTERSTATE deliveries. 

Type 15a

Description: Framed, 25˝-26mm diameter, single dateline with a code letter followed by an asterisk.

Recorded Usage:  December 17 1887 - February 11 1900 for both types

Codes: A - E and H - L as well as a double asterisk **

Type 15b

Description: Framed, 25˝-26mm diameter, single dateline with an asterisk followed by a code letter.

Recorded Usage:  December 17 1887 - February 11 1900 for both types

Codes: M, N, O, P, S, T, V, W, Y, Z. One example of AM is recorded (no asterisks)

Type 16

Description: Framed, 24mm diameter, Code and 2 line date. Small dash at each side.

Recorded Usage:  August 24 1890 - August 14 1895

Codes: A - E, H(1 rec), J(1 rec), K, L, M

Description: Similar to type 16 however the letters "QL" replace "BRISBANE"

Type 18a

Description: Similar to type 16 but with no bars at the side. 24˝mm diameter.

Recorded Usage:  October 15 1895 - July 22 1901

Comments: After some wear the small dots appear as one large dot. Also known with the year missing.

Description: Framed, 25-26˝mm diameter, 3 line time and date. One small dot at each side

Description: Same as type 22 but with "POB" instead of time.
