Brisbane Duplexes.

A duplex is an implement which combines both an obliterator and a datestamp. There are 11 different types with most having 2 or more subtypes. It remains a challenge finding examples of some of these on cover particularly if you want to complete the codes as well.

 

Type 1

Description: Obliterator:  3 concentric circles 21 x 15mm

                      Datestamp:  22mm, 2 line date, year in 2 figures, words reading outwards.

Recorded Usage:  May 16 1860 - 1864

Codes:  None

Comments: Common to find the obliterator on chalons but full examples on cover are scarce.

Type 2

Description: Obliterator: QL in thin letters, 32-36 thin broken rays

                      Datestamp: 22-23˝mm, single arc at side, 2 line date plus code.

Recorded Usage:  April 20 1867 - April 24 1869

Codes: b, c, d(1 rec) in italics and numerals 1,2(1 rec), 3(1 rec), 4, 5.

Comments: Probably a combination of the Type 2 obliterator and Type 3 datestamp. Quite scarce.

 

Type 3a

Description: Obliterator: Short curved tail on "QL" 5˝mm high. 34 rays

                      Datestamp: 22˝mm diameter, 2 curved bars. 5-6mm space to obliterator.

Recorded Usage:  December 20 1879 - September 1885

Codes: 1, 2, 4(1 rec), 6, 7(2 rec), 8, 9, 16(inverted)

Comments:

Type 3b

Description: Obliterator: Long straight tail on "QL" 5mm high. 34 rays

                      Datestamp: 23mm diameter, 2 curved bars. Uses a code letter.

Recorded Usage:  1887 - 1892

Codes: A(1 rec), C, D(1 rec), E, H, K(1 rec), N, O(1 rec)

Comments:

Type 3c

Description: Obliterator: Short straight tail on "QL" 6mm high. 34 rays

                      Datestamp: 23mm diameter, 2 curved bars. Uses a code number.

Recorded Usage:  November 2 1885 - 1894

Codes: 3, 5, 8-16, 18, 19, 20

Type 3d

Description: Obliterator: Short angled tail on "QL" 5mm high. 31 rays

                      Datestamp: 23˝mm diameter, 2 very short curved bars. Uses a code number.

Recorded Usage:  October 30 1890 - September 11 1893

Codes: 1, 2, 10 - 34.

Comments:

 

Type 3e (previously unrecorded type)

Description: Obliterator: Short straight tail on "QL" 5mm high. 38 rays

                      Datestamp: 24mm diameter, 2 curved bars. Uses a code number.

Recorded Usage:  March 21 1892 - July 1 1893

Codes: 20, 22, 25, 28-32.

Comments: Probably the most short lived of the duplexes. Not yet sighted on cover.

 

Type 4

Description: Obliterator:  Thick "QL". 34 rays

                      Datestamp: 24˝mm diameter, 2 very short curved bars. Uses a code letter.

Recorded Usage:  May 10 1892 - 1896

Codes: A, C, D, E, H, L, M(1 rec), N(2 rec), P, W.

Comments: The first framed datestamp.

 

Type 5a

Description: Obliterator: 35 thin rays. Short tail on "Q". Thin "QL"

                      Datestamp: 24˝mm diameter, Dot at each side. Looped tail in "Q".

Recorded Usage:  September 25 1893 - July 26 1898

Codes: 1, 9, 13 - 37.

Comments:

 

Type 5b

Description: Obliterator: 35 thick rays. Short tail on "Q". Thick "QL". Has stops.

                      Datestamp: 24˝mm diameter, Dot at each side. Very short thick tail on "Q".

Recorded Usage:  July 13 1899 - October 24 1908

Codes: 1 - 38

Comments: This is the most common of the Brisbane duplexes however it is still a challenge trying to obtain each code letter on cover

 
Type 6

Description: Obliterator: 37 unbroken rays. No stops

                      Datestamp: 25mm diameter, Dot at each side. "PAID" at top and "BRISBANE" at base. 2 line date with no code..

Recorded Usage:  November 2 1895 - December 30 1895

Codes: None

Comments: The rarest of the duplexes and only 2 examples recorded on the above dates

 
Type 7

Description: Obliterator: An oval of 6 horizontal bars with "QUEENSLAND" across the centre.

                      Datestamp: 25-26mm diameter, "BRISBANE" around the top 2 line date and code.

Recorded Usage:  August 26 1895 - 1905

Codes: 1, 6(1 rec), 8(1 rec), 11(1 rec), 12 - 36, 37(1 rec), 38(1 rec)

Comments: Similar to the Melbourne type. Single digit codes extremely rare.

 
Type 8

Description: Obliterator: 27 thick rays. Thick "QL". 

                      Datestamp: 25mm diameter, "QL" at the base. With or without a dot at each side.

Recorded Usage:  1896 -  March 21 1901

Codes: No codes but has time

Comments: Quite scarce, used primarily as backstamps.

 
Type 9a

Description: Obliterator: 27 thick rays. Thick "QL". 

                      Datestamp: 25˝mm diameter, 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  March 8 1899 - May 17 1907

Codes: No codes but has time. 

Comments: Known with "BA" in the time position which is more likely a poorly struck 8A.

 
Type 9b

Description: Obliterator: 27 thick rays. Thick "QL". 

                      Datestamp: 25˝mm diameter, 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  1906 - September 21 1908

Codes: "PXB" in place of time. Means "Posted in Interstate Box" 

Comments: Same as previous type except for the insertion of "PXB"

 
Type 9c (previously unrecorded type)

Description: Obliterator: 34 rays. Thin "QL" with loop on tail of "Q"

                      Datestamp: 25˝mm diameter, 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  May 29 1906 - May 15 1907

Codes: "POB" in place of time. Means "Posted in Overseas Box" 

Comments: Recently discovered. Only a few examples recorded.

 
Type 10a

Description: Obliterator: 26 rays. Thick "QL" but smaller than previous types.

                      Datestamp: 25-26˝mm diameter, Time plus a 2 line date.

Recorded Usage:  October 1 1902 - 1905

Codes: Nil 

Comments: Campbell's Type 10 now has 3 subtypes.

 
Type 10b

Description: Obliterator: Same as 10a

                      Datestamp: 25-26˝mm diameter, Time plus a 2 line date. Lettering is larger.

Recorded Usage:  March 16 1910 - October 12 1911

Codes: Nil

Type 10c

Description: Obliterator: 27 thinner  rays. Thin "QL".

                      Datestamp: 25˝mm diameter, Time plus a 2 line date. More space between lettering and frame.

Recorded Usage:  November 30 1910 - June 2 1911

Type 11

Description: Obliterator: 45 rays. Thin "GPO".

                      Datestamp: 24-25mm diameter, Time plus a 2 line date. 4 small dots at each side although after wear this looks like one large dot.

Recorded Usage:  July 14 1905 - February 20 1910

Comments: Fairly common.
