New South Wales Period

This covers the time from settlement of the penal colony at Moreton Bay in 1823 to the separation of Queensland in 1859.

 

Numeral 95

4 bars top and bottom with 2 bars at each side. Used until 1864. although hard to find on later dates. Rarity Rating C

 

Type  0

31 x 24mm oval with "BRISBANE" at the top and "NEW SOUTH WALES" at the base. A 2 line date with year in full, a crown above and a star at each side. Issued sometime between 1849 and 1852. Rarity rating 2R.

 

Type 1

An unframed circle 29-30mm in diameter with "BRISBANE" at the top and "NSW" at the base. A 2 line date with year in full and a star at each side and in the centre. Issued in 1852. Rarity rating 3R

 

Type 1a

An unframed circle 21-21˝mm in diameter with "BRISBANE" at the top and "NSW" at the base. A 2 line date with year in full and 2 curved bars at each side. Issued in 1857. Rarity rating R.

 

Paid at Brisbane

2 line boxed handstamp "PAID AT BRISBANE" Originally struck in red this is probably the earliest of the Brisbane postal markings being known on an 1847 entire. it is exceptionally rare on cover and is most likely found on chalon head stamps as it was used well into the Queensland period. Rarity rating 4R on cover and 2R on stamps.

 

Other Markings

Also recorded for this office is a "PAID" cancel surmounted by a crown. Also a "PAID SHIP LETTER" oval datestamp and manuscript "FREE".
