SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (March 16, 2009) Orange Show Speedways 2008 champions were honored in a unique fashion Saturday during a pot-luck barbecue at the conclusion of an open practice session. The traditional champions dinner could not be held this winter, so after hearing and reading numerous inquiries from racers and their families about whether or not there would be an awards banquet, track photographer Mary Secord and track worker Kim Chapin took the initiative and organized the pot luckto honor the title winners, rookies of the year and top finishers in the point standings in each class. Approximately 225 people were in attendance to enjoy, among a mountain of food offerings, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs provided by Factory Four team owner Gary Mendoza, cheesesteak sandwiches provided by Phillys Best restaurant owner Blake Usilton, a cupcake tower from Mini-StocKar driver Dick Laycock and a beautifully decorated cake from Factory Four driver Kim Marzullo. John Pope, the former head of technical inspection, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the presentations ceremonies. Each of the champions received jackets provided by Clay Wooster of Tri-City Towing and Ruben Duran of CEC Embroidery and photos from Mary and Bruce Secord. The Secords also gave photos to the top points finishers and the rookies of the year, former race director Gary Stockman and wife Denise provided awards to the track record-holders, Loren Hill of DJ Safety presented each of the rookies of the year with a gift certificate, and ButlerBuilt seats had gift certificates for the third-place finishers in each division. Finally, OSS promoter Rick McCray and McCray Enterprises awarded a complete race car paint job to Factory Four truck driver Victor Garcia, who his peers considered the most deserving of such an award. Garcia, of San Bernardino, is a gardener who races on a limited budget, but he has attended every race for the past two years.
