The Civic Theatre - Newcastle - Australia
Empire Theatre
This heritage-listed building was designed by prominent architect Henry White and originally opened by the then Premier of New South Wales in 1929. Regarded as one of the finest architects of the period, White specialised in cinemas or "picture palaces" as they were then called. In all, he designed some in 183 theatres in Australia, New Zealand and North America, many in partnership with John Eberson. Sydney's State and Capitol Theatres are among their other designs from the same period.

Although designed as a live-theatre, the Civic was immediately leased as a cinema to Northern Amusements (in association with Newcastle Theatres Pty Ltd and Greater Union). In 1941 Hoyts gained control and the Civic continued under this management until 1973. Newcastle City Council then decided to move towards more live productions and phase out cinema operations completely. This adaption was undertaken over 1974-76. With little maintenance having been done on the building over the years, the Civic was in much need of renovation. In June 1992, the Civic closed for a $10.4 million refurbishment which saw her reopen in November of 1993 as Australia's Premier Regional Theatre. This grand old lady is now firmly ensconced on the Australian national touring circuit, and hosts most touring musicals, as well as concerts and a wide range of music, theatre and dance events.

Cruise Ships of the Past !

The Australis
My First cruise ever as an Entertainer was on The Australis - unfortunately for me Crossing the Tasman from Sydney to Auckland - was not the best trip to do first up - Although the Australis seem to take it in her stride ! - which could not be said the same for me - Even my accordion was sea sick ! ( Many people to this day - say it never fully recovered ??!! )
The Australia

Australis was completed as the America in 1940. After war service as West Point, she re-entered service with US Lines in 1946. She was bought by Chandris in 1964, operating on the service to Australia from 1965 to 1977. After an unsuccessful attempt to run out of New York for Venture Cruises, again named America, she returned to Chandris as Italis, but was laid up again in 1979.

The Saga Rose

Sagafjord was completed in May 1965 by Soc. des Forges de la Méditerranée (La Seyne sur Mer). The builders lost so much money on her construction that they went into liquidation the following year. Sagafjord was 24002grt and carried 85 First and 704 Tourist passengers on Atlantic crossings, 462 in one class when cruising. She was powered by two 9cyl Sulzer diesels totalling 27000shp. In 1980, she and Vistafjord passed to Norwegian American Cruises (NAC), 90% owned by NAL. In 1983, Trafalgar House acquired NAC, and the ships joined the Cunard fleet, Sagafjord retaining her name. In 1996 was chartered to Transocean Tours as the Gripsholm, followed in the same year by sale to Saga Cruises as the Saga Rose.
