COL JOYE - AUSSIE SHOWBIZ LEGEND !
Col Joye is one of Australia's best known and loved Entertainers - and this Poster from 1968 - also features some more Aussies in Showbiz , which are all household names.
Whilst Alan Dale and J O'k were slowly starting thier music careers in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, the far Western suburbs had their participants as well, mainly Lonnie Lee then living at East Bankstown later to become Greenacre, and Col Joye who was living at the last stop of the railway line on the George's River at East Hills.
Col was the second eldest of the Jacobsen family. Kevin the eldest was a piano player and he decided to start a trio with Col on guitar and vocals and youngest brother Keith on an electric bass that they had built.
In late 1958 they started promoting pure Rock 'n' Roll dances in the Western suburbs and quickly built up a fan base which he kept right up until he retired from singing, in the early 1990's. His style was very personable on and off stage and it wasn't long before he was challenging J.O'k for the top spot. He also performed many times at the Sydney Stadium and across Australia to capacity audiences and became the main music performer on T.V's Bandstand.
From his first Festival release he had hit after hit !
His first major hit was Bye Bye baby and this was followed by .. Clementine, Oh Yeah Huh Huh, Teenage baby, Bad man, Yes Sir that's my baby, Today's Teardrops and Heaven is my woman's love. There were many other singles amd albums and he was to become the major seller on the Festival Records label.
Col, Keith and their sister Carol, under the guidance of big brother Kevin, built up their ATA booking agency and studio to become one of Australia's leading promoters even as we speak. Now called Kevin Jacobsen Promotions they have taken over a little from where Lee Gordon left off as importers of interntional talent and Broadway shows.
A Special Thank You to Sylvia Raye for Permission to show this Poster - A very rare one from what I have been told !
Above Picture Flashback: Sylvia Raye a contestant on the 0-10 Network's Showcase '66 and a regular performer on the Nine Network's Bandstand.
Bill Reid's Tribute to The Tivoli Theatre - Aberdeen
As a young boy growing up in Scotland, I remember my trips to Aberdeen very well indeed. My Dad was originally from The "Bridge of Don".I did my first Radio Audition for BBC Scotland at the Studios there
...and of course saw many live shows as well. Aberdeen's TIvoli Theatre presented many of the Top variety Shows in those days.....
Many years later, at the age of fourteen I was appearing in a Grampian television show called "THREE"S COMPANY" where we used to tape the shows up at the Queens Cross TV Studios in Aberdeen , and then go out on the Road appearing with the same show in the North East Area of Scotland. It was during that time I visited the Tivoli Theatre with one of the stars from our Show singer Steve Cameron
, and we went backstage to Visit a man I had the greatest admiration for - Accordionist Will Starr ...who I knew somewhat for spending time with him backstage at the Empire Theatre in Inverness. AT the Tivoli working at that time was a young Stage Lighting Operator, by the name of Bill Reid ( Pictured )

...we never ever met in those early days ...but I'm sure I must have passed him, if not seen him briefly on my visit that night.
Bill has put together some of his photographs, memories ,and thoughts into a great Web Site and Tribute to the Tivoli. There are some great photographs taken by Bill himself of just some of the stars that graced the stage there.Although the Tivoli finally closed it's doors on Variety Shows in 1963, and carried on later as a Bingo Hall..... But I'm glad to say that the Tivoli has now been renovated....and has a new lease of life ..and hopefully Variety Shows may return to this great lady of Scottish Theatre.
See some rare footage taken at The Tivoli, of some of the Great Scottish Variety Stars by Permission of Bill Reid Click Here !
