NOVEMBER 10th, 1990 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN SAN DIEGO AT THE SPORTS ARENA

This is A Quality. For 13 years ago, someone did a damn fine job of recording this! Sounds like a HUGE crowd, and the crowd loved this concert, rightfully so! ZZ is playing very fast at this concert. The tempo is quicker than to way faster than average on most songs. It's very interesting to listen to. A true ZZ fan will get a high off this one. Goosebumps are guaranteed. I got this one direct from the Master from the person who taped it (a 'Master' taper no doubt). This is a truely amazing ZZ performance. ZZ Rocked this place apart and the crowd gets insane. This is one of ZZ's finest concerts that I have ever heard! This is a TOP 10 Live show! Thanks so much Brian!

This is an A Quality transfer from LP

This is the ZZ Top Story, a 1990 interview with Ed Shocky covering the entire history of the band. 3 hours long. Transfer is from an LP of unknown origon. Appears to be from a radio show called the "Unistar Radio Network" as it has some commercials in it. Has a few clicks and pops from the LP source. Extremely RARE! Outstanding!

JANUARY 28th -&- 29th, 1991 ~ ZZ TOP IN NEW YORK CITY AT THE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

These are A-B Quality. Both full shows both nights. Great way to hear ZZ just 24 hours apart at the same venue, which is a little unusual. Set lists are the same both nights. The recording quality on the 28th is much better than on the 29th. Will only trade this one as a (4) CD set as these shows should stay together for comparison.

(4) CD SET

1) Planet Of Women
2) Sleeping Bag
3) Tell It
4) Waitin' For The Bus
5) Jesus Just Left Chicago (New York City Mention)
6) Ten Foot Pole

9) My Heads In Mississippi
10) Manic Mechanic
11) Heard It On The X
12) 2000 Blues
13) Blue Jean Blues
14) Just Got Paid Today

The massive highlight of this pair of shows is Billy's incredible performance of what may be the longest version of "Just Got Paid" ever which is 8 minutes long on the first night, 6.5 minutes long the second night. I'm not even going to try to pick a few creative words to describe that as it's non-descript. It's the finest performance of "Just Got Paid" that I have heard. The whole first night was just unbelievable overall. The following night was great as well. Billy talked a lot more the first night.

15) Love Thing
16) Unknown Techno Song (4.5 minutes long)
17) Got Me Under Pressure
18) Sharp Dressed Man
19) Give It Up
20) Legs
21) Tube Snake Boogie

MARCH 1st, 1991 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN HARTFORD CONNECTICUT

(2) CD SET

Quality is A. This is most likely a soundboard recording, as there is no local crowd noise. You can hear the audience but this was not recorded from somewhere in the audience. It's sounds as if it were recorded from above the stage or somehow plugged directly into the sound system. This show was released on silver pressed CD under a fake label in Italy titled "ZZ Top Live In Hartford". The cover had a picture of a woman in a bikini (less top) laying on the back of a red Ferrari. That CD was sourced and remastered from a bootleg Vinyl record. ***This is a direct LP to CD archived version***. This version of the show came directly from the soundboard vinyl LP, not the bootleg CD. Outstanding performance.

1) Intro
2) Planet Of Women
3) Sleeping Bag
4) Tell It (Like It Is)
5) Waitin' For The Bus
6) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Connecticut Mention)
7) Ten Foot Pole
8) Gimme All Your Lovin'
9) Concrete And Steel
10) My Heads In Mississippi
11) Manic Mechanic
12) Heard It On The X
13) 2000 Blues

(Billy says "How about them Black Crowes tonight huh?" The crowd yells "No!")

14) Blue Jean Blues (Fantastic!)
(Extended Version - Billy says "That wasn't something in the record, just a little something we do now and then.")

15) Just Got Paid (Billy brings out Pearly Gates)
16) Love Thing
17) Got Me Under Pressure
18) Sharp Dressed Man
19) Give It Up
20) Legs
21) Tube Snake Boogie
22) La Grange
23) Tush

Ends with some type of explosion, perhaps fireworks shooting up from the stage.

APRIL 11th, 1991 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LAKELAND FLORIDA

(2) CD SET

Also on VHS or DVD (Audience Filmed)

(Show is missing the 1st song, Planet of Women and starts in the middle of Sleeping Bag). This show has some flaws here and there were the video taper turned off the camera for a few seconds several times, perhaps to prevent being spotted, who knows. Overall it's mostly complete and fun to watch. They look like they are having fun on stage, even Frank. Boys are dressed in black suits with white baseball caps. The taper using a hand-held camcorder gets better at zooming in as the show progresses. Gives a really good look at the stage show, laser shows and props used.

1) Intro
2) Planet Of Women
3) Sleeping Bag
4) Tell It (Like It Is)
5) Waitin' For The Bus
6) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Florida)

(Laser show of a hot rod taking off on the ceiling)
12) Heard It On The X
(Blues time in Florida)
13) 2000 Blues

(Billy says, "Shall we do it? Bring me my pearly!" Changes guitars and says "Pearly gates is back!"
15) Just Got Paid (Awesome version!)
16) Love Thing
17) Got Me Under Pressure
(Bizarre trash compactor stage show!)
(They return to the stage wearing bright yellow suits with matching top hats)
18) Sharp Dressed Man
19) Give It Up
(At the end five women come on stage wearing short shorts, tank tops and hard hats, start dancing and then at the end exit on moving sidewalks)
20) Legs (Fuzzy guitars)
(Laser show of a very long legged nude woman on the ceiling)

ENCORE:

21) Tube Steak Boogie
22) La Grange
23) Tush
(Ends with a large indoor fireworks pyrotechnic explosion from behind the drums and as the band exits smaller pyrotechnic explosions light up the stage all in the area of the drums - Does end with a "bang!")

JUNE 12th, 1993 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN ~ MARCUS AMPHITHEATRE
HARLEY DAVIDSON 90th Anniversary Party

This is the only full concert that ZZ Top performed live in 1993. Fortunately it is a very good quality recording. Some have said it's a soundboard recording. I think it's just very good quality digital audio. I believe this concert contains 3 songs never otherwise performed live; Gun Love, Blue Monday, and The Beverly Hillbillies TV Theme Song. Quality is A - / A+. This is one of the TOP 10 BEST ZZ Live audience recorded shows!

OCTOBER 1st, 1993 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND AT THE NEC (NATIONAL EXHIBITION CENTRE) - ERIC CLAPTON CHARITY SHOW

An extremely rare show. ZZ performed two nights in a row as part of an Eric Clapton Charity event with Joe Cocker.

(1) CD SET

Billy opens the show by thanking Eric Clapton and Joe (Cocker) for the last minute invitation. "We gonna have a good time in here tonight", mentions that they are on "holiday" and to "relax" with 'em tonight.. Night #1 was a very relaxed paced bluesy show where night #2 gets down and jams hard. Very interesting comparison of their broad flexibility and variance of play styles. Billy says "Let's start by goin' down with this Elmore James tune here, and I believe I will dust my broom."

01. Dust My Broom

(Billy says "Dusty's gonna sing Willie Brown's Future Blues)

02. Future Blues

(Billy says "Well that's what will happen to ya ya know, ya hang down there in that Memphis town a little bit, it'll happen to every one of ya, just get, ya just get that, it gets all over ya. That bluesy soil and stuff. Sang somthin' down there. "

03. I Loved A Woman (Awesome slow bluesy soft and extended 6 minute version by Dusty)

(Billy says "Well I'm gonna unbutton this jacket here a little bit and show ya that we be the sharp dressed men tonight."

04. Sharp Dressed Man
05. Just Got Paid
06. Tube Steak Boogie
07. La Grange

Encore:

(Billy says, ah look, everybody's still here! I can't stop now either ya'll!)

08. Jailhouse Rock
09. Tush

MAY 25th, 1994 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN BINGHAMTON NEW YORK AT THE BROOME COUNTY ARENA

A quality. This is a quite enjoyable recording of this 1994 show. The main highlight of this show is the rarely heard live performance of "Cover Your Rig". This may be the only live performance of that song ever. It's a lively low down blues song with a lotta great guitar jams that keep building. Overall it's a very nice performance. This is one of the best audience recorded shows of 1994 both in quality of fan recording and ZZ Top's performance and sound. Something a little humorous about this recording is that whoever taped it, during a break between songs yelled to his friend that "Dude you should have been here, you missed out!". Haha! This was obviously a killer show to attend. Sounds like someone did miss out but at least someone saved this one. Every show deserves a future hear!

This show is a prime example of why fans should always try to get a recording to save instead of just a photo or two. Not only did they pull an odd song off, but for the true fan there's a 'lil more to be found here. Note Billy's guitar starting in the middle of "She Love My Automobile".

JULY 6th, 1994 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN WELS AUSTRIA

A- quality. This is a rare recording from Wels Austria. Not at all bad for 1994. Someone in the audience in Austria did a fine job of recording this. I almost called this a B+, but it's more like an A--. It is the only known ZZ Live recording from this European country. Sounds like it was in a sports arena, it's definitely an indoor venue. Crowd is extremely into the concert always clapping and singing along, and it's not just local to the recorder, it's the whole crowd. At one point it sounds like thousands of people are chirp like whistling along with the beat like crickets. I've never heard a crowd do anything like that before, and I think this is the 180th zz live audience recording I have listened to. Extremely cool and very strange! Still as one long single track per cd as off original tape, could be split up into cd tracks. Listen to loud with some smoke and bbq.

I was able to get a second opinion on this show today and a passing ZZ Top fan stopped by my house right when I was listening to it. They laughed and said "Oh bitchin! How did someone record that so well?"

Also, a highlight of this show is the special treatment given to "Breakaway". It's totally awesome! Show includes some unusual extended versions!)

SEPTEMBER 22nd, 1994 - ZZ TOP LIVE PEORIA ILLINOIS

C quality. Yes, someone captured this from the audience as well with a hand-held camcorder. The sound really sucks on this one. The show is introduced with an extremely profane diatribe by Pauly Shore, who seemed to think that he and his excessive profanity were cool. What a dick! Anyway, Pauly was shooting footage for some movie and danced around all over the stage during World Of Swirl. The sound tends to improve over time and the show is very interesting to watch due to all of the stage effects.

11) Rough Boy
12) Gimme' All Your Lovin'
13) Planet Of Women
14) She Loves My Automobile
15) Antenna Head
After this song there is a bizarre stage show where it looks like a large power transformer explodes and then the boyzz return to the stage but coming up through the bottom of the stage in glass tubes, sort of like elevators. Bizarre!

17) Legs

OCTOBER 5th, 1994 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE MEMPHIS TENNESSEE AT THE PYRAMID

A- recording. It's an A+ performance! This show is recorded on CD as single long tracks one per CD. Someone should split it up to allow easy selection of each song. Billy makes some very unique and personal comments about Scott Patterson and a lot of other people in Memphis. Billy says that "being in Memphis has a way of feeling at home." For the real true to heart ZZ fan/addict, the version of "Breakaway" played here in Memphis is so low down and sweet that it's a goosebumps guaranteed one! I do not believe any other archived live performance exists that has this kind of treatment of "Breakway". If this one had been just a little bit better in recording quality it would more than likely be more common. Yet this is actually a very hard show to locate. Billy says a lot of stuff in between the songs and this one is a must hear! Major THANKS to "Jim" for this one. It's a Gem Jim!

I would be extremely interested in trading this concert with anyone who has it in order to compare recordings and see if there may have been more than one audience recording of this show. I know that this recording is from the most original source possible. Myself, personally, I will have to include this live performance of "Breakway" among at least the top 50 most excellent performances ever by ZZ live. This will make you stop and pay attention, and replay this song to make sure you heard it right! Try listening to it just once. You can't! This is a TOP 10 ZZ Live performance!

(2) CD SET

1) Intro (With pyrotechnics) & World Of Swirl

Beavis & Butthead

Billy Gibbons deals with Beavis & Butthead with style. Unusual and unique.

NOVEMBER 24th, 1994 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN MILANO ITALY AT THE PALATRUSSARDI (ANTENNA TOUR)

A-/A Quality - A little muted at first, but it gets good. Very nice performance. I would have to call this performance a nice "tight" one. It's sound has a good feel and ZZ seems to be overall very well on with this one, as well as very relaxed and extremely creative. There are some interesting variations and some prime good examples of what ZZ was playing live in Europe in '94 and how they were playing it. This is an enjoyable show to listen to. What is funny is how anal Billy is being with his attention to perfectly clear English with his comments in between songs. Billy was obviously trying to be as perfectly slow, clear and as precise as possible so that the Italians would be able to understand him. This "attitude" if you wish does most certainly bleed into his vocal performance at this show. It's very clear and concise. And it's really nice. I have listened to this show 4 times in a row today. I'll bet ya can't just listen to it once! Just as a closing thought, ZZ treated this show with an unusualy long full setlist with unique and extended versions in abundance! This is awesome.

(3) CD SET

1) Intro
2) World Of Swirl
3) Pincushion
4) Breakaway
5) Waitin' For The Bus
6) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Milano Mention)
7) I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
8) Cheap Sunglasses
9) Tell It (Like It Is)
10) Fuzzbox Voodoo
11) Just Got Back From Baby's (Billy nearly tears the sides off his guitar - killer!)

Beavis & Butthead Skit

12) Fool For Your Stockings
13) Rough Boy (5 minute long extended version ~ Nice Performance - Sounds Cool!)
14) Planet Of Women
15) Just Got Paid Today ~ Extended version (Just plain remarkable!)

Lone Wolf Horns come onto the stage with an introduction by Billy

16) "She Don't Love Me, She Loves My Automobile" (With The Lone Wolf Horns) ~ This is an extended version as well. I wonder if Willie Nelson has ever heard this one? I'll bet he hasn't.
17) PCH
18) Antenna Head
(Dusty's vocals are considerably off key - sounds pretty funky in a not so good way. Billy trys to compensate to the different off-key Dusty vocals with the lead guitar and ends up putting this song to rest in a pretty way. I think it's a real safe bet that this song has never been done live quite like this except here. It's a nice 4+ minute long extended version)
19) Legs (Very interesting version quite well done! Well. Alright, this is beautiful! Nice long extended legs...)

Encore: (You can hear Italian fans talking (in Italian), and the crowd ends up chanting "Z Z Top" in English of course and the accents of this chant are very appealing. The crowd itself sounds great and they get their Encore demand! They obviously had a good time over there that night. Even during the Encores this crowd is incredible to listen to. They sing along and chant a good deal.

20) Sharp Dressed Man
21) Gimme All Your Lovin'
(Four minute long extended version ~ Very fast pace! ~ This is an awesome treatment of this song!)
22) Viva Las Vegas
(5 minute long Extended Version! Possibly unique! Sounds bitchin'! Need I say more?)

23) La Grange (An absolutely astounding and melodic extended version!!!)
24) La Grange Part 2 (Yes there -IS- a La Grange Part 2 ~ Here it is!)
25) Tush

26) Unreleased electronic song pre-recorded with vocals by Billy comes on the sound system as the crowd begins to exit. The recording only captures about 10 seconds of that song.

This show is about 2 hours long. Yep! 25 live songs. 26 songs if you count the pre-recorded unreleased one played at the end. A very nice long show. This may in fact be the longest show that has been preserved by audience recording. All songs are at a somewhat relaxed pace and most are extended versions.

This is a TOP 10 BEST LIVE ZZ performance!

DECEMBER 7th, 1994 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN FRANKFURT GERMANY
(ANTENNA TOUR)

A Quality - SUPER quality for 1994! A little bass distortion, but not that bad at all. Extracted from original tape to CD as single long tracks. A German fan did a fine job of saving this show from the audience back in 1994! Sounds like a huge crowd, very tight performance, and a remarkably unique extended just blazing version of "Breakaway". Stress on the -unique-.

DECEMBER 11th, 1994 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN BRUSSELS BELGIUM AT THE VORST NATIONAAL (EN BELGIQUE)

A- Quality - Not Bad at all. Has very good bass and is a great recording for 1994. Nice show, ZZ played very laid back and relaxed.

6) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Belgique Mention)

9) Tell It Like It Is

Something went wrong between these two songs and it took a few minutes to get to the next song. Billy said "It's allright, we're gonna be here all night long." and then he played a short little guitar solo during the pause. Someone who was stationed in Germany E-Mailed me and according to him and several people who attended this show, Billy kinda got his beard tangled up in the guitar strings a little bit which explains the delay.

DECEMBER 14th, 1994 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE STUTTGART GERMANY AT THE HANNS-MARTIN SCHLEYERHALLE

A- Quality - This is a nice quality recording for 1994. It was released on a bootleg pressed CD in Europe titled "I Love My Automobile" on a fake label called "Diverse". It's a very nice performance by ZZ Top. Excellent show!

Please anyone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this was ZZ Top's final concert of the 1994 Antenna Tour, their last live performance with The Lone Wolf Horns and the last time they have played several songs live. It also appears as if the band took a break for all of 1995 and then started doin live performances again in the summer of 1996.

OCTOBER 25TH, 1996 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY NEW YORK AT THE RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL ON TIMES SQUARE (Continental Safari Tour)

Quality is A-. This was taped from the audience with a handheld digital camcorder with nice audio. This was a SOLD OUT show and at the end of the video the person who taped it also video taped a shot of the Radio City Music Hall lighted marqee on Times Square that says "ZZ TOP SOLD OUT". This show is from a very clear first generation duplication then to digital DVD. Conversion to digital DVD for long term preservation was done by using a Dazzle 150 USB 2.0 Digital Video Encoder (DVE) with real DVD encoding chip, and an external USB 2.0 TDK DVD-R+R using Moviestar V5.0 & Roxio DVD Builder. Billy jokes around about how someone was supposed to be giving him a New York Yankees baseball cap, and how they were going to win (the New York Yankees). Interesting show, blazing extended version of "Nationwide" with some masterful lead guitar jamming. Billy announces their "brand new cd" called "Rhythmeen". Billy states that the guitar he uses during "Just Got Paid" was purchased at a place just down the street called "Mojo Guitar" and he thanks someone named "Chris". During the end of the Encore break a fan hands Billy a large photo and Billy says "thats me 10 years ago" and he hands it back. Extended version of "She's Just Killing Me" with extra lyrics. This is a fun show to watch.

NOVEMBER 9th, 1996 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN BERKELEY CALIFORNIA AT THE BERKELEY COMMUNITY THEATER

A- quality. Not a bad recording. Nice bass. Still in the form of single long tracks per disk and should be split up properly. This sounds like a venue designed for music as they sound really nice. A somewhat odd and longer setlist than for the average concert at the time. Extra lyrics (and profanity) in "I Walked From Dallas". Cool version. Very enjoyable show to listen to. Rhythmeen had just been released on 9/17/1996 and they seemed to enjoy playing new stuff off of it. A very low down bluesy performance.

NOVEMBER 21st, 1996 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA AT THE LAKEFRONT ARENA
(Continental Safari Tour)

A+ Quality. This is one of the nicest fan tapings of 1996, very clear clean sound, full bass, just very nice. This is an excellent and very fun concert to listen to. Billy announces Rythmeen as their new album. Billy also mentions how in Jesus Just Left Chicago (which they did not play) he (Jesus) was always headed down to New Orleans, and how everything is always headed down towards New Orleans. And that Jesus is still in New Orleans. Very interesting concert to listen to. I would have to say that this is one of the TOP 10 Best ZZ Live Recordings. Billy Gibbons is very vocal and this concert kicks ass! Thanks again Brian!

MAY 24TH, 1997 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA AT THE GREEK THEATRE

Quality A

This was recorded from the audience and it's a nice one. Billy talks to the crowd a lot and while this is not recorded with the perfection of the shows being recorded in 2003, it's pretty darn good for 1997. You can tell that whoever recorded it did adjust the input levels or "volume" if you wish, and it's a good thing that they were keeping and eye on that or the whole concert could have been recorded too low, as in the first few seconds of "Got Me Under Pressure". This was obviously recorded with a digital audio device with better than average mics for the time. Overall it's a very nice recording and a top notch performance as well. This is a must have and very enjoyable to listen to.

The person who taped this show noted that it was during a major International car show and that ZZ Top and/or Billy Gibbons had cars on show including The Eliminator.

(2) CD SET

1) Got Me Under Pressure
2) Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings
3) Bad Nationwide
4) Pincushion

Band takes a break and Billy talks a lot of stuff, like "Yeah thank you and uh huh!", "It's all tight and it's all right.", "We got famous for hats and sunglasses, yeah..", "Now this is a hat, I love my hat...", "I see Pete Sheporez and all of his hot rodding buddies out here tonight..", "...he helps us with all these purty little red cars and he taught us how to do this stuff perfect. How to get the bodywork perfect, how to get your steps perfect, get all the, all the chops perfect. Everythings perfect, and a dragonfly gets in Dusty's beard!" "But that's allright, we make it up as we go along."

(Short Intrumental Intro where billy says "You think we know what we're doing." (as a statement not a question))
5) Brown Sugar
(Billy exclaims "We gonna have a good puh, puh, puh, puh, party on the patio!)

6) Party On The Patio

Now get this. Billy says, and I quote this "Dusty felt like partyin' uh huh! Robert Rodriguiz our buddy's here tonight so we are gonna get funky, play that low down scary, wicked, vicious nasty , funky movie soundtrack, crazy Vincent Price Blues. Get down with it!"

7) Vincent Price Blues
(Editors Note : Totally Excellent, but ouch; Person recording had to change tapes or CD so lost the end of this song while ZZ was jamming just prime. But that small fault doesn't really matter considering the overall thing! :)
8) Heard It On The X

(Billy talks to the crowd about getting on your "Rhythmeen Thang...")

9) Rhythmeen
10) Bang Bang

Billy introduces Elwood with "Come on out here Elwood Francis, yeah. One time. Ladies and Gentlemen, uhm, the the sharpest dressed guitar man in the building Mr. Elwood Francis here. And yeah, that man needs a hairdresser. That man is ugly! Oh yeah! It's about that time to go down into the bottom of your pocket, the bottom of your purse, gotta hide them eyes and put on them Cheap Sunglasses!")

11) Cheap Sunglasses
12) Just Got Paid Today (Extended - This is awesome, period!)
13) Legs
14) Gimme All Your Lovin'
15) Sharp Dressed Man

Encore:

16) She's Just Killing Me
(Billy starts the crowd doing wolf howls (I.E. Ow Ow Owwwww!!!!!!))
16) La Grange Extended Version
(Short break afterwards)

17) La Grange Instrumental (Surf's Up!)

Note : #17 La Grange Instrumental and #18 Tush are played non-stop as a medley

18) Tush
(Band leaves the stage a second time and returns for a second Encore)

19) Tube Steak Boogie (Live Version Of "Tube Snake Boogie") (Crowd Sings Along)

20) Pre-Recorded Music as crowd exits. Noname electronic song by ZZ with Billy Gibbons vocals, but only the first few seconds! Was often played at the end of their shows up through 2002.

JULY 13th, 1997 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN WANTAUGH NEW YORK AT JONES BEACH - MEAN RHYTHM US TOUR (WIRED AS HELL)

Quality B-. While it was great that so many 1997 concerts were preserved by fans, the recordings in 1997 seemed to be plagued. This is not a great recording, and to make it worse, someone recorded this disk in Track At Once so there are 2 second gaps between the songs. This is an outdoor concert on the beach. ZZ put on a really good show and this recording should be remastered.

Update : 12-02-2003 : Just in, a complete audience filmed video!

This sounds like it was a killer concert and it's a shame the recording was not better. This recording sucks big time. Sounds like it was done on a tape cassette in the parking lot by the restrooms. It is somewhat listenable and gives (at least) a good idea of what the concert was like.

Quality A!

And here we go, another -GREAT- recording from 1997! This is a very nice show. Crisp and clear audience capture, ZZ sounds super. They are playing a little slow and relaxed. Very cool. This is one of the best shows and best recordings of 1997.

SEPTEMBER 19th, 1997 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN PHOENIX ARIZONA - Veterans Memorial Arena

Quality on this is about a C+ / B- It sounds good some of the time, but it sounds like it was recorded on a tape cassette devoid of bass most of the time. It's pretty clear, there just isn't any bass. Could be remastered perhaps. This sounds like it was a killer concert and it is a damn shame that the recording was not on better equipment.

SEPTEMBER 18th, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN SUNRISE / FORT LAUDERDALE FLORIDA AT THE NATIONAL CAR RENTAL CENTER

Quality A-. This was taped from the audience with a handheld digital video camera.
The video is very interesting but it's not very focused most of the time. The audio is quite decent though and it's an excellent live performance!

OCTOBER 1st, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN HAMPTON VIRGINIA AT THE HAMPTON COLISEUM (XXX TOUR)

Quality B. While this is not one of the best quality recordings it's still an interesting show to listen to. It sounds like it's in a somewhat huge arena which could contribute to the slightly poor quality recording. It sounds like whoever recorded it was in an upper level quite a good way from the stage. There are a few flaws as the person's cd player/recorder skipped a few times, but hey, at least someone saved this show and it is fun to listen to. What is amazing is the sound of the crowd. I mean. This sounds like a damn Super Bowl crowd or something! This is one of the largest and most excited crowds to be found on a ZZ live audience recording. The sound reminds me of what it was like hearing ZZ Top in the Houston Astrodome. I suspect the Hampton Coliseum must be as large or larger than the Astrodome. This may have been an open air concert as well.

OCTOBER 10th, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN FAIRFAX VIRGINIA AT THE PATRIOT CENTER (XXX TOUR)

Quality A. Very nice recording. And a very unusual start. Right after the Ross Mitchell intro the band started out almost as if they were confused at to what they were going to play, and ended up playing Waitin' For The Bus as the show opener, with a different type of beginning. It's as if they were going to play Got Me Under Pressure which would have been normal for the setlist at the time, but they skipped it.

OCTOBER 23rd, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN AMES IOWA AT THE HILTON COLISEUM (XXX TOUR)

Quality A - This is a fantastic recording and performance! This was obviously recorded with a high end digital audio deck from in the audience with high quality binaural microphones, likely tiny stealth mics by Core Sound. This is pretty darn close to being there at the show yourself! It sounds like whoever recorded it was on the 1st elevated level by a speaker, as the sound recording is excellent. You can hear a level of the crowd below you, yet no crowd noise ever overpowers. It's pretty awesome! Billy is fairly vocal with the crowd at this show and makes some interesting comments about their album "Triple X". This is -very- enjoyable to listen to! This one is a -must have- for any complete ZZ Live collection. :)

NOVEMBER 10th, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS AT THE ALLTELL ARENA (XXX TOUR)

Quality B+

This show opens with an unusual variation of the Ross Mitchell introduction unlike any I have ever heard before. I call it the "Hillbilly Intro" for lack of a better description. Ross Mitchell says "Ladies & Gentlemen" and stops, then some Hillbilly sounding dude repeats "Ladies & Gentlemen".. and so on. The Hillbilly dude sounds pretty drunk in fact and I wonder who in the world it was. It's pretty funny and he repeats everything in the Ross Mitchell intro, obviously from on the stage. This is a great performance. The recording is not terribly bad. It's a little low but it's most certainly well worth listening to.

Update: The HillBilly mystery has been solved. Thanks Paul! E-Mail from ZZ Fan Paul: "I noticed you have the November 10th 1999 Little Rock Arkansas show on your website. The Hill Billy you hear doing the intro along with the Mitchell intro was Billy Bob Thornton dressed as his sling blade Carl character. If you haven't seen the movie Sling Blade you won't get it ) Billy Bob is from Little Rock or parts close by and he and Dusty are good friends. I was at the show and it was different for sure."

NOVEMBER 30th, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN RENO NEVADA AT LAWLOR EVENT CENTER (XXX TOUR)

Quality C

While the first half of this show is listenable, the second half is very poor. It is complete, however whoever recorded it had what sounds like a major failure of a cd drive. This sounds as if it were recorded on a miniCD player/recorder, which skips due to a dirty head or something. It's gets so bad during the second half of the show that it's not worth listening to. It is included in this library for completeness only. If you have a better version please let me know.

DECEMBER 17th, 1999 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN DALLAS TEXAS AT THE REUNION ARENA (XXX TOUR)

Quality A-

This is a fairly nice quality recording, however someone created the CD's as one long track each. Someone needs to split this show up with track breaks so it can be listening to by selecting any song. It's still fun to listen to like it is and it sound like the crowd had a good time in there that night! After "Jesus Just Left Chicago" there was a significant break where Billy talks to the crowd a lot! He talks about how it's great to be back in Texas and "This is where it all started right heah!". Billy introduces his hat and called it his "African Sombrero" and says more than once that he got it for just $10. Very interesting show to listen to.

FEBRUARY 4th, 2000 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN SAVANNAH GEORGIA AT THE SAVANNAH CIVIC CENTER
(XXX Tour)

A Quality - A very rare recording only a few months before the rest of the tour was cancelled due to Dusty's illness. It's a very nice performance and a top notch audience recording. Billy's vocals sound particularly good here as if he was really havin' a good time in there that night. Billy talks a lot in between songs and at one point mentions that they had a new song out called 36-22-36 but they do not play it. When picking up a pair of panties off the stage he said that "if you cut these in half you would still have more than twice enough". Billy, Dusty & Frank were all three obviously into this show and it's one of the best performances I have ever listened to. There are some outstanding unique lead guitar variations. This is a TOP 10 BEST! Just as another note, normally when I review a show I just listen to it once. This one was so good I listened to the entire show twice in a row. I suggest this show for -any- ZZ Top fan, it's killer.

7) I Loved a Woman (Billy talks during first verse - excellent version!)
8) Bang Bang (Totally unbelieveable scorchin' guitar variations!)

Billy says "Woo wee! Bang Bang & Shang Alang! Here's another model. This one coming from our new version. The petite model from the other side. I know what your reaching for but now it's time to look down in the bottom of your pocket or bottom of your purse and put em on, them cheap sunglasses!"

2001

The only live performance that ZZ Top did in 2001 was Jan 18th at the GWB Inauguration. I do not have that show but I am wanting it. I will trade 10:1 for it if anyone can locate it!
