Listed Oldest To Newest

JULY 21st, 1981 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA AT THE SPECTRUM

(El Loco Tour) B+ Quality

Not a bad recording at all for 1981. Recorded TAO (Track At Once) so it has 2 second gaps between songs. Excellent show! I am looking for a DAO (Disk At Once) gapless version.

OCTOBER 2nd, 1981 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN STOCKHOLM SWEDEN AT THE GOTA LEJON (EL LOCO TOUR)

A--/B+ Quality. Oh yeah! This is a nice one here! Rare old show recorded with nice quality for 1981 for sure! Has a few little flaws but it's unusually clear for a 1981 audience taping. Excellent performance. The crowd goes pretty crazy in their solid demand for an encore and they won't let up!

20) Unknown pre-recorded song as crowd chants non-stop "ZZ TOP! ZZ TOP!"

(Note: I have listened to over 175 ZZ shows that were captured by the audience and I have never heard this song played before during a pre-encore break). This is some sort of a European techno song and it is my guess that it was supposed to end the concert, as ZZ Top routinely plays techno songs as the crowd exits, but in this case, the crowd would not leave nor let up on an Encore demand. And they got it.

Encore:

21) Dust My Broom
22) Just Got Paid

Unknown song played as crowd leaves ("Where Are You")

OCTOBER 11th, 1981 - ZZ TOP LIVE IN MUNCHEN (MUNICH) GERMANY AT THE NEUE WELT

A Quality. Wow, someone made a really nice recording of this from the audience in Berlin in 1981. The crowd is super pumped up and it's a nice performance. An interesting note is that some of the fans kept yelling requests, one in particular for "Tube STEAK Boogie". Even in Germany in 1981 the fans knew the correct name of the song, Tube Steak Boogie, the live version of Tube Snake Boogie.

OCTOBER 25th 1981 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN PARIS FRANCE AT THE PAVILLION BALTARD

(El Loco Tour) A Quality

This was a very loud fast show. Someone in the audience did a great job of recording it. It starts a little unusual where "I Thank You", "Waitin' For The Bus" & "Jesus Just Left Chicago" are a medley. Overall it's a great performance, and a very nice recording. One of the best audience saves of 1981. Also the second to the last show of the El Loco Tour, with the following night in Great Britain being the last show of 1981/El Loco (see below).

(1) CD

1) Groovie Little Hippie Pad

16) La Grange
17) Tush

Dusty says "Merci!"

OCTOBER 26th 1981 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LONDON AT THE HAMMERSMITH-ODEON

(El Loco Tour) B+ Quality

Not a bad recording at all for 1981. This was ZZ Top's 1st time playing live in London. Thanks to David in the UK for setting me straight on all the early UK shows! Billy said "We've been workin' all month long and now this is the last night we've got over here, so it's time to tear this place down!" So this is likely the last Euro show of 1981. The major highlight of this show is the 2nd Encore with Mexican Blackbird and two other songs "I'm Going Down Down Down" and "Let's Go Get Stoned" which are likely the only live performances ever.

(2) CD SET

1) Groovie Little Hippie Pad
2) I Thank You

15) Tube Steak Boogie
16) Jailhouse Rock
17) La Grange
18) Tush

SECOND ENCORE:

19) Mexican Blackbird
20) I'm Going Down Down Down
Note: This is not the same song as "Deal Goin' Down" by Z Z Top, although it has some (few) of the same lyrics.

21) Let's Go Get Stoned!
Note: Possibly the only live performance ever of "Let's Go Get Stoned!"

MARCH 21st, 1982 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA AT THE COW PALACE

(El Loco Tour) A- Quality

This is a great recording for 1982. An awesome 21 year old show! ZZ sounds excellent at this show. Crowd sounds huge and loves the concert! The version of "Fool For Your Stockings" is a totally awesome extended version with different lyrics and the crosses sermon!

MAY 28th, 1982 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE AT DORTMOND GERMANY ~ Westfalenhalle

(El Loco Tour) B- Quality

Incomplete - Possibly from a video of the show.

(1) CD

8) Dust My Broom
9) La Grange
10) Tush

Notes: The crowd loves it and enjoyed this concert. Crowd claps along and chants ZZ Top in their Euro accents. Not a bad recording for 1982. It sure could use some bass, but it gives a good idea of what ZZ sounded like in the early 80's. Not many El Loco concerts can be found today.

MAY 29th, 1982 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN WURZBURG GERMANY

(El Loco Tour) B+/A- Quality

Somewhat muted but at least someone was able to save this show from the audience. It's got that old ZZ sound. Whoever recorded this either moved out from behind some people or adjusted their recorders settings as once it gets to "I'm Bad I'm Nationwide" the quality of the recording improves considerably, with some awesome bass. It seems like about halfway through the show, the band really started to get into and proceeded to kick some very serious ass!!! Cool older show to listen to!

DECEMBER 31st, 1982 and JANUARY 1st 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN PHOENIX ARIZONA

(El Loco Tour) B- Quality

Not a great recording but at least someone saved it. Sounds like it was a huge crowd and ZZ put on a fine show. A highlight of this show is when ZZ plays "Auld Lang Syne" as the year changes from 1982 to 1983.

AUGUST 20th, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN DERBYSHIRE UNITED KINGDOM AT THE CASTLE DONNINGTON PARK (MONSTERS OF ROCK FESTIVAL ~ Eliminator Tour)

B Quality, a little muted but certainly not bad for 1983. A very interesting show to listen to, with that old ZZ sound. La Grange is awesome here. This show should not be confused with the August 17th, 1985 audience recording here at the same venue, Castle Donnington Park. They are two different shows, two summers apart.

Thanks to my pal Tama in Japan for finding this old classic show and sharing it.

(2) CD SET

This concert was also partially broadcast live on FM radio in Derbyshire United Kingdom. Tracks 1-17 above are the entire concert as recorded from the audience. The following tracks are also included on disk #2 which is an excellent quality recording of the live FM radio broadcast!!!! This is a fantastic way to compare how ZZ Top sounded live from the audience as compared to a soundboard feed to FM radio (which is totally superb here!)

19) Waitin' For The Bus
20) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Castle Donnington)

OCTOBER 16th, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LONDON AT THE MARQUEE THEATRE

(Eliminator Tour) B- / B+ Quality

This sounds like a small venue. Not a terribly bad recording for something done by a fan in the audience in 1983. For an early 80's recording this is very nice. Billy talks to the crowd quite a bit. This is a great show!

NOVEMBER 3rd, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN PARIS FRANCE (Eliminator Tour) B Quality

Very nice performance. Audience recording has a few flaws here and there that are not really that big of a deal but should be noted for historical perfectionists. Someone keeps bumping the mics as if the person recording this had the mics in their clothing or they may have been dancing and hitting other people. The show is still listenable aside from that. Decent recording. Would be an A- but I give it a B due to the bumps. They are only in a few songs. The show recording the following night (see below) does not have the bumps.

(1) CD

1) Got Me Under Pressure
2) I Got The 6
3) Gimme All Your Lovin'

NOVEMBER 13th, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN DIJON FRANCE (Eliminator Tour) A Quality

Another excellent quality recording from 1983 in France. Very pumped up powerful show with a blazing tempo. This is amazing. His a little bit of a hiss due to whatever it was recorded with, but's it's great to listen to. A modern remaster job could remove the hiss. Sounds like it was a nice tight sound venue for music. It's hard to believe how fast they are playing. What's interesting about this show is how different Billy's vocals sounded 20 years ago. It's not that old ZZ sound that seemed to go away around 1981, nor is it like he sounds today. It's almost as if he is singing in his real actual voice instead of lowering it intentionally. It's very interesting in that respect. This is the only show I have heard where Billy sounds like this. Even though all bandmembers were 32 or 33 they sound like teenagers.

(1) CD

1) Got Me Under Pressure
2) I Got The 6
3) Gimme All Your Lovin' (Billy annouces the song in French "gimme tout votrousen" but he should have said "gimme tout votre aimer")

NOVEMBER 24th, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN GLASGOW SCOTLAND AT THE APOLLO THEATRE (Eliminator Tour) B- / B+ Quality

Slightly distant audience recording but an enjoyable show no doubt. Quite rare. The crowd loves this show and sings along more than any average show! This is really cool. Too bad the recording was not better, but hey, 1983? This is the only audience recording of ZZ Top in Scotland that is known to exist.

NOVEMBER 27th, 1983 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN LONDON ENGLAND AT THE HAMMERSMITH ODEON-LONDON
(Eliminator Tour)

B- / B Quality - This was ZZ Top's second time playing live in London at the Hammersmith. Back then it was called the Hammersmith Odeon-London. Today it is called the Apollo Hammersmith. ZZ also played the following night (11/28/1983) in this same venue yet they replaced the song "Arrested For Driving While Blind" with "Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers". That (11/28/1983) show was recorded from the audience as well, and I have finally located it as well (see below). Unfortunately this (11/27/1983) recording is on the poor side, but it is listenable. ZZ cranked out a blazing fine performance over there!

B- quality.

Not a very decent recording but perhaps not bad for 1984. This is a very rare show one of few known to have been recorded by the audience in 1984. It's a very nice quality performance and the crowd seems to really be enjoying it.

DECEMBER 1st, 1985 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN MONTREAL QUEBEC CANADA

B+ Quality ~ This was taped from the audience with a handheld VHS Camera. The audio is as well as can be expected for a mid 80's era handheld video camera. It's not bad. Video is good and shows perhaps 2-3 generations of VHS copies. Conversion to digital DVD for long term preservation was done by using a Dazzle 150 USB 2.0 Digital Video Encoder (DVE) with real DVD encoding chip, and an external USB 2.0 TDK DVD-R+R using Moviestar V5.0 & Roxio DVD Builder. Cool show! Arena wide synchronized laser lighting was used during "Manic Mechanic", "Cheap Sunglasses" & "Party On The Patio" which is/was very cool looking!

FEBRUARY 7th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN SAINT PAUL MINNESOTA AT THE MINNESOTA CIVIC CENTER (Afterburner Tour)

A- Quality ~ A few small recording flaws but this is a fun show to listen to. It still has the venue announcer at the start giving all the rules to the crowd such as staying in your own seats, not standing on the seats and no smoking. The crowd was not happy about the "no smoking". It's pretty funny. ZZ's performance at this show is quite nice.

JULY 20th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN ANGELS CAMP / CALAVERAS COUNTY CALIFORNIA AT THE MOUNTAINAIRE '86 JUMPING FROG JUBILEE, COUNTY FAIR, AIRSHOW & ROCK CONCERT

A- Quality ~ This is the Holy Grail of my own personal ZZ Top collection as it's my 1st time seeing ZZ Top Live and my 1st recording of them. It was lost from 1986-88 until August 2003. This was recorded on a Panasonic tape cassette deck and some studio quality microphones that I "borrowed" from my Dad's collection of radio electronic stuff that he used as a DJ. The unlabeled tapes were remarkably well stored in plastic cases for 17 years in the bottom of a box of books and video tapes. There's a gap during "Arrested For Driving While Blind" as my tape ran out and I had to change it. I had also recorded The Cars the same day. I had just graduated from High School weeks before this show and this was the post graduation party for a lot of us youngsters in the state at the time.

About this show: Well, to begin with the Jumping Frog Jubilee was an annual Bullfrog jumping/race event in Calaveras County which ended up combining with the Merced Airshow in 1985 and in 1986 over 100,000 people turned out to fill an entire open air concert which spread over an entire valley in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Newspapers and radio stations reported anything from "incalculable numbers" to up to 300,000 people. During the 2nd day crowds had torn down all of the ticket gates and fences and just flowed in freely. There were stages set up from one end of the valley to the other and bands played at different locations for 2 days as stunt planes flew overhead skywriting their names. It took over an hour just to walk from one end of the valley to the other. Other bands that played were Van Halen, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, The Cars, Metallica (who was then a garage band telling people to tape their shows and share the tapes with friends), The Scorpions, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Rod Stewart, Cindi Laupher, Huey Lewis & The News, Herby Hancock, The Tubes, REO Speedwagon, Whitesnake, Soft White Underbelly and about half a dozen other bands including ZZ Top. Pablo Star had opened on the ZZ Top stage. It had been advertised on radio stations for over a year before as "Mountainaire '86 Rockin' The State of California!". There was a huge turnout by the Hell's Angels bikers and a coastal nudist colony of thousands of nude people demonstrating their rights. While there were only a few thousand nudists on the 1st day, there were at least over 20 or 30 thousand nude people by the second day, as the Hell's Angels were giving out free beer and crystal meth (crank) to any women in trade for all of their cloths and they were burning the cloths in barrels. At least 1-2 or more of 10 people ended up nude by the 2nd day. There was a newscaster from Sacramento who was fired after nude photos of her surfaced which caused a public outrage. The Hell's Angels ended up riding their bikes all over the valley running over campgrounds, blankets and tents and even people some of the time, if they did not get out of the way fast enough. While police had warned that there would be arrests for public nudity the show ended with no reported arrests for anything. There was a huge amount of beer drinking and pot smoking going on with people handing out Humbolt county skunk weed by the handful out of paper grocery sacks, free, as well as LSD and mushroom vendors with tents and signs. By the second day there were rumors that the police had been ordered not to arrest anyone, due to the fact that there were not enough police and considering that if they started arresting people that it would remove all police from duty within hours to perform all the arrests. By the second day people were taunting the police by smoking weed in front of them and offering them drugs and beer and chanting "F*ck the pigs!" The show was cancelled for 1987 and newspapers reported the cancellation due to the '86 event spurning unprecedented elicit drug use, intoxication, public nudity, destruction of state and county property and four deaths. There was a car accident following the end of the show where 4 teenagers were killed leaving. That was blamed on an intoxicated driver.

Aside from the kids that got killed, this was an absolutely bitchin' event. I came home severely sunburned and remember sleeping for a few days. It had taken about 5 hours just to find our car as we had forgotten where we left it the day before. I thought my tapes of it had been stolen by a roommate in 1988 and it was really cool to finally find out that I still have them. If you listen carefully you can hear the planes flying over ZZ Top as they wrote " Z Z " in smoke across the valley sky. ZZ Top performed the 1st night just before sunset. There was some sort of canvas or cloth canopy over the ZZ stage and there were mini-riots going on where other stages were being torn down by insane mod mentality. Huey Lewis & The News was reportedly ran off stage as the crowd tore down the stage.

SEPTEMBER 12th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN STOCKHOLM SWEDEN (Afterburner Tour)

A+ Quality ~ A beautiful recording from the audience! And a truly fine performance. The drums are remarkably well preserved . This recording is not a soundboard, but it's of the same quality. Makes one wonder what one used to record this. Back in 1986 we did not have the small recorders and mics as of today, so someone had to have quite a setup in this show to do this. This is some essential Zz to the complete collection. The crowd sings and claps and chants along and chants "ZZ Top" at many points. This was a potent show for those who were there. This will give ya those "good music goosebumps"! This is just absolutely incredible.

And then the following night in Sweden;

SEPTEMBER 13th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN STOCKHOLM SWEDEN (Afterburner Tour)

A+ Quality ~ The second night. Thanks Will! This is just plain nice! This is a different venue than the previous night, as this sounds like a sports arena with echo unlike the night before. 9/12/1986 is the #1 best recording of 1986! This is comparable but the performance the day before way outdoes this one. This one is great. The 12th was masterful. But this crowd here was unique and very strong with chants. Really cool.

SEPTEMBER 29th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN PARIS FRANCE (Afterburner Tour)

A Quality ~ Another great one from France. See below for the following night as well. They are using synthesizers or synthesized backup no doubt. It is a nice performance, crowd enjoys it and they sound great. It seems to be a somewhat relaxed tempo compared to that of the early 80's. All songs are strongly enhanced by the synth backup. Very cool. This is some really good listening right hea'!

OCTOBER 1st, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN BERCY-PARIS FRANCE

A Quality

Well done recording from Paris. Very nice quality! Excellent show! This is a top notch digital recording from 1986? I didn't know they had digital decks back then that someone could carry into a show. This could be a soundboard patch. This is likely the best audience recording of 1986, truely amazing!

OCTOBER 8th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN CLERMONT-FERRAND FRANCE

A Quality

Very nice audience recording. Crisp & clear and a wonderful performance also. A very enjoyable show to listen to! This is a very fine example of what ZZ Top sounded like live during the Afterburner tour. This is a very powerful energy charged show which sounds like it was recorded from mics up in the air as there is no local crowd noise. You can hear the crowd just enough as to where it's a very nice balance and the crowd sounds like they are going pretty crazy. What a show. Must have been an incredible one to be at. Thank goodness someone saved it!

OCTOBER 25th, 1986 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE IN BERLIN GERMANY AT THE DEUTSCHLANDHALLE (Afterburner Tour)

Quality A+

This sounds like a soundboard recording. Quality of recording and performance are both excellent. This is recorded in TAO (Track At Once) mode with gaps between songs. I am looking for a gapless version. This was released on a bootleg CD titled "Top Guns" on a fake label called "Three Cool Cats". This sounds very, very nice!

Do note, this is a short show, about an hour and it is complete. Yes, they did skip "Waitin' For The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago" as they played at almost every other show in 1986. Billy says very little in between songs and they seem to be in a hurry to stay on schedule for a shorter than normal performance. The pace of the songs are quicker than average. It would be easy to assume that there may be something missing from this archived recording, but when listening to the transitions between songs they are obviously seamless. There's nothing missing. This was a shorter than normal show as if it were on a strict time limit. ZZ may have been performing at a larger concert with multiple bands thus the shortened set list.

(1) CD

1) Got Me Under Pressure
2) Sleeping Bag
3) Gimme All Your Lovin'
4) Manic Mechanic ("For all you Porsche fans!")
5) Rough Boy
6) Cheap Sunglasses
7) Legs (Just Plain Fantastic!)
8) Sharp Dressed Man
(Has the same very rare techno blast-off intro with monks and angels, electronic blips and gong later used in Osaka Japan on 02-19-1987 ~ 10 second vocal space like countdown (It's not Billy or Dusty and may actually be Frank Beard) - sounds killer! )
9) Can't Stop Rockin' (This is amazing - The crowd gets wild and sings along - Totally excellent!)
10) Velcro Fly (Extended Techno Version)
11) La Grange
12) Tush

FEBRUARY 25th, 1987 ~ ZZ TOP LIVE MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA AT THE OLYMPIC PARK

B Recording. At least someone in the audience in Australia saved this one. Shame it was not recorded better. It's still quite listenable. Not many shows from Australia have been saved (Zz Top has not played that many times in Australia), and not many audience recorded shows from 1987 exist. The only other 1987 (audience preserved) shows that I am aware of were from Japan. Sounds like it was a great performance down under! Powerful and consistent with what they did in Japan the same year, just prior.
