Housing

SAM Country Club Kit with Value Added Package Our experience with these highly active and intelligent little creatures is that they need housing that both provides exercise and mental simulation. One of the best ways to provide these requirements is with connector sets, such as, Habitrails, Hartz and S.A.M. Other types of cages available on the market today are wire cages, aquariums and plastic “tub like” containers, which will work temporary. Not recommended for hamster are homemade cages made of wood. Although many look nice they cannot last to the constant gnawing and urine of a hamster. Please remember when looking for a cage it must be easy to clean and hold up to the repeated chewing of these curious little guys.

SAM Fifth Avenue Duplex Kit
It is likely that most people do not own more than two hamsters. If this is the case a cage with the floor area of a ten-gallon tank is the minimum requirement for these little creatures. A basic rule of thumb is to allow at least 5 gallon of space per animal. If there is less than the minimum the animals will be in consistent stress and fighting. Another way to reduce stress and fighting is to provide them with plenty of chewable toys.

Animal Lovers Gnaw-Dent
With dwarf hamsters you must always have something for them to chew on. Whether it is something that you purchase at a store or found around the home, it must be easy to clean or replace. Some great items for your pet(s) are toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, chew blocks and anything else that is non-toxic for them. Just to name a few!!
