Pumpkin Time Mini Unit Study

Activities

If you are lucky you can go visit a local pumpkin farm, but since we live in the city, we go to Walmart where they have a big outdoor display to choose our pumpkin.

Make orange your color of the day or week. Make a collage of pictures with orange in them, finger paint, or color a picture of something orange.

Walk around your block and see what signs of autumn you can find, leaves changing color and falling to the ground, cooler temperatures, etc.

Talk about fall/autumn being harvest time for many people. Pumpkins are fruit, and member of the gourd family. If you carve your pumpkin for a jack o lantern, bake a yummy treat using the seeds. Or you can use the seeds for a counting activity.

Recipe

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds: Cut open a pumpkin and scoop the seeds into a strainer. Wash the seeds in the sink under running water and spread the seeds on a towel or paper towel to dry. Spray a cookie sheet with oil. Spread the seeds on the cookie sheet. Bake at 250*F for 1 hour to dry the seeds out. Turn the oven up to 350*F and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until browned slightly. Salt, if you wish, and store in an airtight container.
